The gorillas in the valleys in the south often lived together in groups of several tens. They were fond of drinking wine, and even fonder of imitating man's behavior.

People knew very well their habits and often put wine or distiller's grains on the roadside together with many straw sandals connected together with ropes.

The gorillas knew this was a trick to lure them into traps and cursed:

"Humph! Do you think we don't know your tricks? We'll never be taken in!"

So they called one another, turned round and left.

But they had already smelled the aroma of the wine, and couldn't bear to part with it. Even after they left, they would turn their heads to look back. When they saw no one there, they would turn back; and after they turned back, they were afraid of being deceived, and left again. After much hesitation, they finally said to themselves:

"Just for a taste of the wine. It won't matter as long as we don't get drunk."

Shortly afterwards, they agreed to come back to drink the wine. When they got drunk, they forgot everything. Every gorilla put on the straw sandals and imitated the way man walks.

As a result, they fell down one after another and were all caught alive by people.

The teacher asked her students in class: "If there are five flies on your desk and you kill one, how many will remain?"

"One," shouted a boy, "the dead one." The teacher said: "You should know that there are still four not dead."

The boy replied: "I know, but they have flown away."

He is right. Arithmatic is one thing, but logic is another.

A mouse once took a bite out of a bull's tail as he lay dozing. The bull jumped up in a rage and, with his head low to the ground, chased the mouse right across the yard. The mouse was too quick for him, however, and slipped easily into a hole in the wall.

The bull charged the wall furiously again and again, but although he bruised his head and chipped his horns, the mouse stayed safely inside his hole. After a time the bull gave up and sank down to rest again.

As soon as the bull was asleep, the little mouse crept to the mouth of the hole, pattered across the yard, bit the bull again -- this time on the nose -- and rushed back to safety. As the bull roared helplessly the mouse squeaked:

"It's not always the big people who come off best. Sometimes the small ones win, you know."

A man had an ass and lovely lap-dog.

The ass was left in a stable, and had plenty of oats and day to eat, just as any other ass would. The lap-dog knew many tricks, and was a great favourite with his master.

The master seldom went out to dine or to super without bringing him something nice to eat when he jumped about him in a pleasant manner.

The ass, on the contrary, had much work to do, in grinding the corn-mill and in carrying wood from the forest or burdens from the farm,.

He often co plained about his own hard fate, and contrasted it with the luxury and idleness of the lap-dog. At last one day he broke the chain and ran into his master's house, kicking up his heels without measuring and jumping as well as he could, he next tried to jump about his master as he had seen the lap-dog do, but he broke the table, and smashed all the dishes on it to pieces. He then tried to lick his master, and jumped upon his back.

The servants hearing the strange noise, and imagining the danger of his master, quickly helped him out of the situation and drove out the ass to his stable, with kicks and beatings. The ass, as he returned to his stall beaten nearly to death, thus cried and said sadly, "I have brought it all on myself! Why could I not have beencontented to labour with my companions, and not wish to be idle all the day like that useless little alp-dog".

Lion was awakened from sleep by a Mouse running over his face. Rising up in anger, he caught him and was about to kill him, when the Mouse piteously entreated, saying: "If you would only spare my life, I would be sure to repay your kindness." The Lion laughed and let him go.

It happened shortly after this that the Lion was caught by some hunters, who bound him by strong ropes to the ground. The Mouse, recognizing his roar, came up, and gnawed the rope with his teeth, and setting him free, exclaimed: "You ridiculed the idea of my ever being able to help you, not expecting to receive from me any repayment of your favour; but now you know that it is possible for even a Mouse to confer benefits on a Lion."

One day, a colt took a bag of wheat to the mill.

As he was running with the bag on his back, he came to a small river. The colt could not decide whether he could cross it. Looking around, he saw a cow grazing nearby. He asked, “Aunt Cow, could you tell me if I can cross the river? The cow told him that he could and that the river was not very deep, just knee high.

The colt was crossing the river when a squirrel jumped down a tree and stopped him. The squirrel shouted, “Colt, stop! You'll drown! One of my friends drowned just yesterday in the river. Not knowing what to do, the colt went home to consult his mom.

He told his mom his experience on the way. His mother said, “My child, don't always listen to others. You'd better go and try yourself. Then you'll know what to do.

Later, at the river, the squirrel stopped the colt again. “Little horse, it's too dangerous!

“No, I want to try myself, answered the colt. Then he crossed the river carefully.

On the other side of the river, the colt realized that the river was neither as shallow as the cow said nor as deep as the squirrel told him.

You see, real knowledge comes from practice.

A Man and a Satyr having struck up an acquaintance, sat down together to eat. The day being wintry and cold, the Man put his fingers to his mouse and blew opon them. "What's that for, my friend?" asked the Satyr. " My hands are so cold," said the Man, "I do it to warm them." In a little while some hot food was placed before them, and the Man, raising the dish to his mouse, again blew opon it. "And what's the meaning of that, now?" said the Satyr. "Oh," replied the Man, "my porridge is so hot, I do it to cool it." "Nay, then," said the Satyr, "from this moment I renounce your friendship, for I will have nothing to do with one who blows hot and cold with the same mouse."
